ShareBiotech Mobility GrantShareBiotech Mobility Grant Applications are currently open for travel and accommodation for visits up to 5 days. Projects must be linked to one or both ShareBiotech priorities: Acquisition of knowledge and know-how regarding advanced technologies in life sciences; Acquisition of management, innovation and business skills to foster technology penetration, promote start-up companies and facilitate access to technologies and development of capacities to enable sharing of technology facilities. Travel GrantsEnterprise Ireland provides travel grants for researchers who would like to visit other EU institutions to discuss potential FP7 collaboration. They will also provide up to €12,500 to researchers who are co-ordinating an FP7 proposal. More info here…………… Innovation VouchersThe objective of the Innovation Voucher initiative is to build links between Ireland's public knowledge providers and small businesses and to create a cultural shift in the small business community's approach to innovation. Joint SFI / EI TIDA funding
Research Infrastructure Call 2012Emphasis in this call will be placed on collaborative efforts and on liaison with industry with the goal of strengthening and sustaining Ireland’s research base for all stakeholders. The candidates must be world leaders in their discipline and must be supported with a full professorship that will continue after the term of funding of this award expires. SFI PIYRA Call OpenThe SFI President of Ireland Young Researcher Award (PIYRA) call is open (rolling call) and is accepting Expressions of Interest. The PIYRA is SFI's most prestigious award to recruit young researchers currently based around the world to carry out their research in third level institutions in Ireland. More information here..... SFI funds travel to labs outside IrelandThe Short Term Travel Fellowship (STTF) funds Irish-based researchers to collaborate on research projects for from 1 to 6 months. SFI US-Ireland PartnershipRecipients of SFI funding can apply for funding under an agreement between the Irish government and governments of Northern Ireland and the United States. The proposal must be submitted to SFI 6 weeks before the closing dates of calls announced by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the US. 3rd Call for Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSM) COST Action IS0902 on "Systemic Risks, Financial Crises and Credit – the roots, dynamics and consequences of the Subprime Crisis" . Will fund up to 7 short term scientific missions by exceptional junior researchers to develop linkages and scientific collaborations between participating institutions involved in the Action. Application deadline is May 18th 2012. Objective is to strengthen the existing networks by allowing scientists to go to an institution in another COST Country to foster collaboration (e.g to draft proposals, undertake research etc). STSMs are particularly intended for young scientists.Duration: from 1 week to 3 months (6 months under approval of the MC for Early Stage Researchers (less than PhD + 8 years) between 04-06-2012 and 28-02- 2013. Eligibility: Normally a postgraduate.
Samsung has just called its 2012 Global Research Outreach programme where they are trying to identify potential long term collaborators across a range of different technologies, telecoms, lifesciences, energy, materials and many more. There are about 70 projects up for grabs. The initial details are here on page 2.
The ERC Starting Grant will now be split into two calls for proposals (Starting and Consolidator), and there will be a single deadline for each call (instead of one deadline per domain until now). Also the Advanced grant call deadline (22nd Nov) is earlier than in the past. More information here.....
The European the Commission has published a call for proposals on the development of Knowledge Alliances. Following last year's call for proposals (EAC/19/2011) and building on its success, the European Parliament (EP) has decided to allocate also for 2012 one Million Euros to the further development of this pilot action. This action will also allow preparing the implementation of the Knowledge Alliances proposed in the upcoming Erasmus for All programme 2014-2020. The Knowledge Alliances are part of the Innovation Union flagship initiative of the Europe 2020 strategy; they are structured partnerships between education institutions and innovation players, aiming at developing Europe's innovation potential. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) issues calls for information and projects here on the website. DIT is an approved organisation under Article 36 so DIT researchers can apply to be considered for Article 36 calls. art 36 organisation. Funding to bring expertise from the USThe Fulbright Senior Specialist Awards provide US academics and professionals with opportunities to collaborate with counterparts outside the US on curriculum and faculty development, institutional planning and a variety of other academic activities in certain academic disciplines for a period of 2 – 6 weeks. CREST featured at EU Innovation ConventionNew Irish technology that kills MRSA and other disease-causing pathogens played a starring role at the first European Innovation Convention which took place in Brussels earlier this month. The light-activated antibacterial surface coating was developed by a DIT research team at the Centre for Research in Engineering Surface Technology (CREST). With funding from Enterprise Ireland, the research team worked with VitrA Ireland, to convert the photocatalytic technology into a commercial product for use on ceramics. Congratulations to Professor Gerry Farrell's team again. The co-authors of the paper (including Professor Farrell, Ginu Rajan, and Manjusha Ramakrishnan from DIT) "A Photonic Crystal Fiber and Fiber Bragg Grating-Based Hybrid Fiber-Optic Sensor System" was published in IEEE Sensors Journal, Vol. 12, No. 1, January
2012, have been congratulated by the President of the IEEE Sensors Council for being one of the 25 most downloaded Sensors Journal papers in the month of December, 2011. Included in this count are all Sensors Journal papers published since its foundation, about 1000 papers in total. The paper is 6th in the list. Find out more here...............

Dr PJ Cullen awarded FIRM funding for packaging research On the 12th December the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney, TD, announced grant awards of approximately €10 million for research projects being undertaken, on a collaborative basis, by researchers from 13 institutions across the island of Ireland. Dr PJ Cullen, College of Sciences & Health has been awarded almost €100,000 for his research project being undertaken in collaboration with UCD: A novel packaging system for food safety and shelf-life extension. The first edition of SDAR* - the Sustainable Engineering Design and Research Journal – was formally launched in Engineers Ireland by Professor Owen Lewis, CEO of SEAI. The Journal is a joint publication of CIBSE and DIT, and is edited by DIT colleague Dr. Kevin Kelly. Dr Mick McKeever awarded IERC fundingFollowing the July call for proposals Dr Mick McKeever, DIT Kevin St, has won close to €320,000 worth of funding from the International Energy Research Centre to develop a novel thermal energy storage unit and heat exchanger to full scale demonstration in large commercial building.
PhD student Paul Cahill based in DIT Bolton Street in the Department of Applied Technology and researching his PhD in the area of Biomedical Engineering has established a company called Urika with another PhD student based in NUIG - Brian Bargary. The company has just released three iPhone apps developed by them and available to buy on the iPhone apps store here..........Paul is also working on a new biomedical applications which are planned for release next year. In the meantime you can see iTap & Go, iTap & Text (free iPhone app) and iTap & Prank on the Apple store.

Robert Morris, School of Manufacturing and Design Engineering, is collaborating with Cupright International to assess the wearability of copper plated hygiene products. Cupright normally manufactures its products using solid copper but Robert is assessing the potential of manufacturing products using more cost-effective copper plating. Matching Funding for Research ProjectsIncreasingly, funders are demanding greater and greater fractions of any research award be co-funded by the recipient. This fraction of matching funding varies from 10% to 75%+ depending on the funder, the programme, the call, the objectives, etc, etc. It is important that both the proposer and the Institute understand where matching funding is coming from before a proposal can go ahead. If a project requires matching funding, please tell us where that funding is coming from by completing the new match funding form available here....
An tSli Ghlas - The Green WayOne of the areas in which Ireland plans to develop future skills and investment is in the area of sustainability and ‘clean technology’. DIT is involved in an exciting collaboration with a number of other public bodies - Dublin City Council, DCU, Ballymun Regeneration, Dublin Airport Authority, Fingal County Council, and North Dublin Chamber – to develop a green economic corridor that will position Dublin as a centre for ‘cleantech’ innovation, education and enterprise. Running from Grangegorman to Dublin Airport it is called ‘An tSlí Ghlas-The Green Way’. The aim of An tSlí Ghlas–The Green Way is to link business to investors and to develop trade partnerships with other green corridors internationally. Launched last November, already this week it has been accepted as Ireland's representative in the Global Cleantech Cluster Association, a prestigious group of the top 20 cleantech clusters around the world. The portal harvests material from the 7 universities and DIT and as such is a one stop shop for access to Irish research. It is important that we maximise this opportunity to showcase our research so you should upload your research outputs to Arrow.

The deadline for submissions under the new SFI Investigators Programme 2012 has just passed. SFI received 449 proposals - 295 submissions under the Investigator Projects category and 154 under the Investigator Awards category.
Sean Sherlock TD, Minister for Research and Innovation, has announced the drafting of a bill to extend the remit of Science Foundation Ireland to include funding of applied research in order to support the development of research findings into commercial opportunities. The Bill will also provide for Science Foundation Ireland to focus its funding on areas of research which have the potential to deliver the greatest return to the economy.
The Board of Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) has appointed Professor Mark Ferguson as Director General of the organisation. Professor Ferguson, a native of Northern Ireland, will take up the position on January 16th 2012. The appointment is for a five-year term. A leading academic for thirty years, Professor Ferguson is also a co-founder of Renovo, a biotechnology company developing novel pharmaceutical therapies to prevent scarring and accelerate wound healing. SFI has been putting an increased emphasis on online communications in recent months has set up a number of tools you can use to follow SFI and join in the discussion/dialogue to promote Science in Ireland. In particular:
LinkedIn – SFI Award Holders Group - SFI has set up a specific closed group on LinkedIn for SFI award holders. The group can be used to network and exchange information across the SFI community of researchers, including conferences, events, collaborations, achievements, calls for programmes, jobs, etc. or other matters you might like to raise with each other.
Facebook - SFI has recently set up a page on Facebook with a view to promoting the work of SFI researchers in a easily understandable manner/
Twitter - If you are on Twitter you can now follow SFI and keep up to date an award announcements, calls for programmes, events and achievements from researchers, etc.
HRB research newsThe Picture of Health 2011 presents a snap shot of some of the HRB-funded research projects that ended in 2010. A total of 105 HRB grants were completed that year, resulting in; 105 new international collaborations; 669 patients enrolled on cancer clinical trials across 14 hospitals; 18 new products and interventions in development; 38 PhD students trained across many health disciplines; 59 influences on policy and practice; leverage of over €11m in additional research funding. Peer reviewers neededIRCSET is looking for evaluators to join their peer review panel to carry out assessments for all its postgraduate and postdoctoral funding Calls. There is generally an online review process followed by a panel meeting. Assessors receive a fee for taking part – dependent on number of proposals assessed. All details here………………
The Minister for Research and Innovation, Seán Sherlock, TD, has formally launched the new Irish Research Council – a merger of the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS) and the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology (IRCSET). Minister Sherlock also used the occasion to announce the launch of the Research Council’s new Industry-based Postgraduate Programme. Under this Programme, students will undertake their research in close collaboration with an enterprise partner, and will be based in the company. More info here………..
DUBlinked is the idea of capturing, analysing and understanding the impact of the real-time human footprint across the city by linking data, people & technologies using a state of the art digital platform. This network is seeking participation and engagement from individuals, industry, public sector and academic members from the Dublin region. The members will help determine the focus of the initiative over the summer, and in September 2011 will see the first release of open data from all four Dublin local authorities here... Forfas and NCC reports on innovation and competitivenessThe innovation report takes an in depth look at trends and developments in Ireland's comparative innovation performance, using the results of the Community Innovation Survey 2006-2008. The aim of the paper is to establish Ireland's innovation performance at international level, identifying macro-level strengths and weaknesses, and to examine in greater detail where in particular these strengths and weaknesses lie. Download it here............. The National Competitiveness Council's Statement on Competitiveness Priorities highlights the main recommendations that the NCC believes need priority attention. These concentrate on four key areas: Enterprise; Competition and Productivity; Fiscal Policy; and Improving Ireland’s Skills, Research and Infrastructure Base. Download it here............

You can also access the COST Actions (past and current) in which Ireland participates by clicking on “About COST” and then enter Ireland under the “COST countries” section of the COST website. Here you will find the Actions listed per country.....
The COST programme funds researcher networks and helps build consortia for an FP7 funding proposal. The latest round of Actions has just been announced and DIT colleagues Dr Louis Gunnigan and Professor Gerald Farrell are part of two of the Actions. You can still join these actions and any of the ones that are still running if there is room - up to two delegates per country can be on the Management Committee. The COST CSO approved 30 more research networks at its December meeting. Researchers can apply to join existing networks or apply for funding to set up a new network. The full list of new COST networks is available here................

The "Advanced Battery Development for Automotive and Utility Applications and Their Electric Power Grid Integration" conference will take place in the city of Münster on March 6th and 7th 2012. "Horizon 2020 - the Framework Programme for Research and Innovation" is the new name for the next Framework Programme. It will be an integrated funding system that will cover all research and innovation funding currently provided through the Framework Programme for Research and Technical Development, the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP) and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). We are told that these different types of funding will be brought together in a coherent and flexible manner. Research and innovation funding will focus clearly on addressing global challenges. Needless red tape will be cut out and access to programs and participation will be made easier and simpler!
International Review of Social Research, an international, scholarly peer-reviewed journal, is currently seeking submissions. The journal publishes original work (unpublished anywhere else), grounded in all areas of sociology, social/cultural anthropology and cognate disciplines such as cultural studies, social policy and industrial relations. We also encourage the submission of research articles that cover emergent, borderland and unexplored topics in both sociology and anthropology. All research topics and methodological strategies are considered valuable, as long as articles are both theoretically and empirically grounded. Comparative, ethnographic, critical and space-sensitive approaches are particularly welcomed. More information here....
