Visa and Embassy Details

It is important to note that admission on to a full time programme at DIT does not automatically guarantee you a student visa. You must also meet immigration requirements in order to reside and study in Ireland.

For all information on completing and submitting your visa application please visit INIS:
www.inis.gov.ie/en/INIS/Pages/Information_on_completing_your_online_application

The Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS) has produced a document for international students in 2008 Student Visa Guidelines.

International non-EU students are permitted to attend recognised full time programmes at DIT on the condition that the students and the Institute comply with specific regulations in relation to the issuing of student visas to such students by the Department of Justice, Equality, and Law Reform.

It is important that all international students on study visas in Ireland are aware of the following student visa regulations:

  • All international non-EU students must register with the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) if they are staying in Ireland for more than 90 days. There is a charge of €150.
  • All students on student visas must demonstrate a programme attendance rate of 80% or higher. It is the student’s responsibility to attend classes and to issue a medical certificate if absent due to illness. Students are also required to notify their programme tutor if they will be away from classes. The International Student Office is obliged to notify the GNIB of any student who is not meeting the required programme attendance rate of 80%. Such students are at risk of losing their student visa.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that his/her student visa is renewed on time. Registered students at DIT will require a visa renewal letter from DIT’s International Student Office to support their application for a visa renewal. Applications for visa renewal are made through the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS).
  • Students on student visas are entitled to participate in employment for a maximum of 20 hours per week during term time and up to 40 hours per week during holiday time. However, all students committed to study during a holiday period, such as those postgraduate students who are completing their thesis during the summer holiday, are only permitted to work for a maximum of 20 hours per week.
